How Moshi Taxi Was Formed

Moshi Taxi was founded by Ashumu N. Laizer, also known by his nickname “Alpha.”
Ashumu is a local Tanzanian from the Maasai tribe, working in Moshi, Kilimanjaro Region, as a tour operator under Oserok Trips.

The idea of Moshi Taxi began when Ashumu bought his first dream car, a Toyota Noah. He saw an opportunity to work as a taxi driver, especially since many of his friends were in the tourism sector. Some of them did not have their own vehicles, while others did, but Ashumu believed they could still request his car to transport their clients to and from the airport or other destinations.

One early morning, Ashumu received a call from a friend asking if his car could accommodate 8 people. Ashumu responded professionally, explaining that for safety and comfort, the Toyota Noah is best suited for 3–4 passengers, allowing enough space for luggage. He also offered to connect his friend with someone who owned a Toyota Hiace, which would be more suitable for a larger group. However, his friend was not interested in that option.
Ashumu also had another friend who regularly requested his taxi services for personal transport, such as trips to his home about 7 km from Moshi town center.

As time went on, Ashumu saw more potential opportunities within his network. One of his friends started a tour company, and Ashumu hoped this would bring more clients for his taxi services. However, things did not work out as expected. He realized that some friends might have been hesitant to work with him due to business competition, since he also owned a tour company.
One day, while at a coffee house, Ashumu met some tourists who recognized him as a Maasai and approached him for a conversation. During their chat, they mentioned they had just returned from climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and spoke highly of their experience, including their chef guide—who turned out to be Ashumu’s close friend. Ashumu told them proudly, “He is my friend; I consider him a brother.” They were excited, took photos with Ashumu, and shared them with their guide.

The next day, Ashumu received a call from that same friend, who said he had tried to contact him earlier to arrange transport for his clients but couldn’t reach him. Ashumu explained that his phone was available and suggested that next time, a message could also be sent. Ashumu accepted the situation calmly, understanding that business competition might have played a role.
Later, Ashumu met a friend from Kili Websites, who had previously designed the logo for Oserok Trips. Ashumu shared his challenge of owning a car but not getting enough taxi work. He then came up with the idea of starting a dedicated taxi service. His friend supported the idea and, as a graphic designer, helped create a logo for the new brand: Moshi Taxi.
Together, they successfully designed the logo and registered the business name “Moshi Taxi” with BRELA.
Ashumu also worked with another friend from Technoclick Tanzania, a website developer who had built the Oserok Trips website. He requested a website for Moshi Taxi as well, and it was successfully developed.
Through collaboration, determination, and vision, Ashumu and his friends turned the idea into reality.
Today, Moshi Taxi has grown to become one of the recommended taxi services in Moshi, Kilimanjaro Region.
